The Nissan Xterra was an off-road enthusiasts dream. It’s compact SUV body stood out against the crowd with its rugged looks and powerful performance, and the heavy-duty suspension made light work of even the toughest terrain. Let’s not forget the impressive 5,000 pound towing capacity and fun accessories that made every trip one to remember.
When it was discontinued in 2015, outdoor adventurers mourned the loss of a great vehicle. Now, we hear that there may be plans to bring it back in the future.
When will the Xterra return?
There’s a big question mark surrounding this topic, but Michael Bunce, vice president for product planning, recently revealed that a return is being considered. The automaker is “very, very closely” looking at the possibility of the Xterra returning to the roads, especially now that the Millennial market is growing and people from all walks of life are interested in getting outside.
There is no firm date, or even confirmation that the Nissan Xterra will make a comeback, but if it does, we’ll be the first to let you know. We expect the soonest it could surface would be at the Beijing Auto Show next year; contact us below if you would like to be updated on the latest Nissan news.
Why was the Xterra popular?
Not only could it crawl the gnarliest terrain, but it also had unique and innovative storage solutions, perfect for the outdoor explorer in all of us. Pack up your gear and get out of town – that was the mentality the Xterra provided. Now that used sales of the Xterra have grown, Nissan is probably looking back and asking why they ever stopped production in the first place.
How would a new Xterra be different?
If Nissan decided to bring the Xterra back to the market, we expect that it would sit on the Frontier’s redesigned platform and get upgrades that include a new engine, transmission, and interior. It’s also very likely that a four-wheel drive and Pro-4X off-road package would be available as well.
